Do I Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade?

The panel is the bottleneck between the utility and everything in your house. Here is how to tell whether yours is fine, full, or overdue — and what an upgrade actually involves.

What the panel actually does

Your electrical panel splits the utility service into individual circuits and stands guard over each one: when a circuit draws more current than its wiring can safely carry, the breaker opens before the wire overheats. A panel has two limits that matter — the total service size in amps, and the physical number of circuit positions. Old New England homes routinely run short on both.

Signs you are at or past capacity

  • Breakers trip regularly under normal life — the toaster and kettle together, the vacuum on the bedroom circuit, space heaters in winter.
  • The panel is physically full, with tandem breakers squeezed into single slots and nowhere to land a new circuit.
  • You still have 60-amp service or a fuse box, common in the region's pre-war housing and increasingly a question on insurance applications.
  • Lights dim when major appliances start, which can indicate the service is working at its ceiling.
  • You are planning a big new load — an EV charger, a heat pump conversion from oil, an induction range, a finished basement.

Fuse boxes and problem panels

A fuse box in sound condition, protecting lightly loaded circuits, is not an emergency. The problems are practical: no spare capacity, no room for modern protection like AFCI and GFCI breakers, and the temptation of oversized fuses. Separately, a few mid-century breaker panel brands have well-documented reliability problems — breakers that fail to trip under fault conditions — and electricians in the region flag them on sight. If an electrician identifies one of these in your basement, take the recommendation to replace it seriously even if nothing has visibly gone wrong.

What the amp number means for your house

Service size is a budget: 60-amp service was generous in 1940, 100 amps became the postwar norm, and 200 amps is today's standard for a house with electric heat, cooking, or a car charger. The right size depends on where your household is heading. New England's push from oil heat toward heat pumps, plus EV adoption, is exactly why so many 100-amp houses in the region are hitting their ceiling at once. A licensed electrician runs a load calculation — a standardized worksheet, not a guess — to size the service for what you actually plan to run.

What an upgrade actually involves

A panel or service upgrade is permitted, inspected work everywhere in New England, and it usually involves more than the box on the wall: the meter socket, the service entrance cable, and grounding all come up to current code at the same time. The electrician coordinates with your utility to disconnect and reconnect service, and the house is typically without power for a working day. Done properly, you end with labeled circuits, room to grow, and paperwork the town and your insurer both recognize. Treat the permit and inspection as features, not friction — they are your evidence the work was done right.

Panel work is never a DIY project

This bears stating plainly: the service side of a panel remains energized even with the main breaker off, and there is no safe amateur version of working in one. The same goes for diagnosing trouble — if the panel is hot to the touch, smells scorched, or a breaker will not stay reset, stop resetting it and bring in a licensed electrician. If there is smoke or fire, call 911 first; a referral service is not an emergency line.

How to decide

If your panel handles today's loads without complaint and nothing new is coming, an evaluation can simply confirm you are fine — that is a legitimate outcome. If you are seeing the capacity signs, or a project is on the horizon, get the load calculation done before the project forces the issue. Panel work scheduled on your timeline beats panel work scheduled by a failure in February. When comparing quotes, ask each electrician what the permit covers, whether the utility coordination is included, and how grounding will be brought up to code — and verify license and insurance before work begins.
